NGOs’ Water Supply and Sanitation Decade Services, a local organisation established in 1954 provided funds to improve health and sanitation in three locations, one in Puttalam Divisional Secretary’s Division (DSD) and two in Karuwalagaswewa DSD through providing potable water and sanitation facilities. Project started in September 2012 and was completed within nine months.

The project started with conducting six social mobilization training programmes for over 175 families in the selected locations. This training encouraged the groups to establish a CBO in each location. With self-help from CBO members and the external expertise constructed ten rainwater harvesting tanks and 23 toilets for their members which are already in use.

The newly established CBOs continue with regular meetings and actively participating in group activities including savings and credit. Their parent NGO Vanni Sanskruthika Padanama and coordinator of Puttalam District Consortium conduct regular monitoring of their work. In this project the strength of the NGO National Action Front’s cohesiveness among the DCs with sharing their human resources was significant with Hambantota DC providing their expertise in the construction of the rainwater harvesting tanks.
