SLCDF celebrated World Environment Day in Deltota

SLCDF in collaboration with Environment and Forest Conservation Division of Mahaweli Authority in Sri Lanka, Natural Resources Management Centre (NRMC) of Department of Agriculture, Gami Pubudu Prajamula Sanvidanaya and Alfaila Prajamula Sanvidanaya of Karagaskada North & South, celebrated World Environment Day in Deltota on 9th of June, 2016.
In a view to increasing the bio- diversity of Upper Mahaweli catchment area and conserving Great Valley, Karagaskada and Mottamale channel banks, it was proposed to plant 1855 plants in either side of these main channels that supply water to Kandetenna Tank in Deltota Divisional Secretary’s Division.
Nearly 375 Bamboo and Kumbuk plants were initially planted around the Kandetenna Tank on June 9th to mark the occasion. Among those participated were Deltota Divisional Secretary, Asst. Secretary and Director – Planning, Grama Niladari of the area, representatives from Mahaweli Authority and NRMC, Programme and Administrative Officer of SLCDF Mr. Sanath Jayatunga and members of two community based organizations (CBOs) Gami Pubudu Prajamula Sanvidanaya and Alfaila Prajamula Sanvidanaya.
SLCDF is supporting this project with inputs for plant conservation and provided refreshments for the participants. The CBO members are engaged in planting and maintaining the plants and plant nurseries. NRMC is providing necessary advice and guidance on technical aspects. All the plants needed are provided by the Mahaweli Authority.
SLCDF acknowledges the extensive support given by the UNDP GEF/SGP under the ongoing project to address the adverse effects of Land Degradation towards Livelihood Development and Food Security and glad that the environment friendly project participants of the two CBOs willingly undertook to implement this programme that brings long term benefits to the country.
