“Plastic Zero Forum”, an initiative that marked its beginning as sharing posts mainly as awareness on P&P. Their Facebook page updating the public regarding the progress of the LOCAL AUTHORITIES & NETWORKS TOWARD ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION (LANTERN) project, funded by USAID / DIG, working towards a plastic zero Jaffna. The forum gradually evolved into a community that takes rapid and effective actions towards its cause with the growing involvement of the youth in Jaffna and outskirts. The forum promotes its activities though their page by posting videos and messages on the effects caused by P&P to the environment whilst educating and encouraging the community to act. With time members of this group have initiated programmes and voluntarily involved themselves in clean-up programmes. The youth portion of the forum is determined to create path ways to reduce the dumping of waste to the marine environment.
A recent endeavour of theirs included a beach clean-up programme under the Point Pedro Urban Council on the concept “We Throw So We Collect”. The programme was held on the 27th of August, 2019. The forum and in an effort to promote this concept and such activities they also undertook a clean-up of a famous kovil, Sannithiyamm, under the Chavakachcheri Urban Council and managed to clean the premises of the kovil before the beginning of their annual festival.
In addition, some of the members from the Plastic Zero Forum also engaged in the preparations for the Bank of Ceylon campaign, where stickers and bags were distributed to the public. Moving forward they also organized and held an awareness programme on P&P usage for the members of Rotaract club of Jaffna and Jaffna Midtown.
Plastic Zero Forum hopes to act as a tool in reaching the dream goal, a plastic zero Jaffna!
