Dairy Development projects – Baseline Survey to Dairy Farmers and Hearing Survey to AI Technicians in Northern Province successfully concluded

A Dairy Development Project funded by JICA / Oriental Consultants Global Co. Ltd was spear headed by Sri Lanka Centre for Development Facilitation (SLCDF) in Northern Province, Sri Lanka. The project was implemented by SLCDF under two separate sub categories on the 1st May, 2019 namely as Baseline Survey to Dairy Farmers and the other as Hearing Survey to Artificial Insemination Technicians was successfully concluded on the 16th September, 2019.

The project was specifically initiated in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar and Vavuniya Districts. The final objectives of the Hearing Survey to AI Technicians sub project were to obtain information of AI Technicians’ situation in Northern Province as a baseline of the Project and utilize the collected information for effective implementation of the Project activities whereas the Baseline Survey to Dairy Farmers was to obtain information of dairy farmers’ situation in Northern Province as a baseline of the Project and utilize the collected information for effective implementation of the Project activities.

Throughout the span of the Hearing Survey to AI Technicians a total of 82 dairy farmers were completed successfully. The Baseline Survey to Dairy Farmers successfully concluded with record number of 384 dairy farmers’ surveys conducted covering 5 districts, 33 DSDs and 100 Grama Niladari Divisions (GNDs).

The survey staff were equipped with a KoBoCollect toolbox, in order to gather the data, which made the data collection process far more efficient.

The data collected through the survey conducted under the Hearing Survey to AI Technicians provide a clear understanding on the situation of dairy techniques in Northern Province are grasped especially in the field of Feed development, Dairy cattle management, Reproduction, Animal health and Farm recording; knowledge on the technical level of private AI technicians; information on activity being reported to Veterinary Surgeons Office; clarification on what equipment and support is necessary to sustain their activities and provided insight into why that some of the AI Technicians in the region have become inactive.

Whereas the data collected through the Baseline Survey to Dairy Farmers provide the overview of the information about the current status of dairy farmers and dairy farming practices in Northern Part of Sri Lanka; insight into gather the challenges and constraints the rural farmers are currently facing and how they solve them using their limited resources and knowledge; knowledge regarding the level of each farmer’s skills and knowledge regarding dairy farming based on face to face discussions also enabled to figure out gaps which needed to be further worked out for further improvement; technological information with regards to the farmers – GPS coordinates and electronic identification of the farmer’s farmyards and faming locations; further clarification regarding the situations of dairy techniques in Northern Province especially in the field of Feed development, Dairy cattle management, Reproduction, Animal health and farm recording and also gives insight into the technical level of dairy farmers.

In conclusion of the project SLCDF was presented a certificate by “Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd.” commemorating the success in implementing all duties demanded by a project that contributes towards sustainable development goal such as ‘”Decent work and Economic Growth” and “Partnerships for the Goals”. The data retrieved through the surveys conducted will prove extremely useful for future planning of the Dairy programme in the Northern Province and attraction of funds to implement improvements.
