Commemorating 100 years of Kos Mama’s Jak Planting Campaign






This year celebrates the Centenary of the Jak Promotion Campaign of the National Hero Late Mr. Arthur V. Dias.
SLCDF jointly with Jak Development Foundation held a Jak Planting programme at Visakha Vidyalaya and Visakha Nursery in Colombo on 11th June 2018 to commemorate the centenary.

Twins Ms. Nethuli Omethma Gamalath and Sanuli Sadewma Gamalath born on World Environment Day (June 5th) planted a jak sapling jointly followed by the Principal of the Visakha Vidyalaya Mrs. Sandamali Aviruppola planting a jak sapling in the school premises, to mark the occasion.

Mr. T.L. Wijetunga – Executive Director of the SLCDF, Mr. W.B.A. Jayasekera – President of the Jak Development Foundation, Mr. Neomal Dias and Mr. Nihal De Silva- two grandsons of the National Hero Mr. Arthur V. Dias and a great grandson of the late Hero were present.

Similarly two jak saplings were planted in the Visakha Nursery School premises by the Chairman of the Visakha Nursery Dr. Tissa Cooray joined by two more great grandchildren of the late Mr. Arthur Dias. A formal programme was held at the Visakha Nursery in the presence of the students.

President of the JDF Mr. Jayasekera and the Principal of Visakha Nursery Ms. Krishanthi Lewke spoke briefly the significance of the campaign that began 100 years ago on 11th June, 1918 by the late Mr. Arthur Dias popularly known ‘Kosmama’ to inspire the students.
